there was a report that intelligence suggested an attack in benghazi saying that report was absolutely untrue. meanwhile, while authorities say that the attack in benghazi was carefully planned and coordinated, it is still unclear whether it was in response to the antiislam film or something timed to coincide with the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, or frankly, it could have been both. we just heard secretary of state, hillary clinton speak directly to the people of the region, saying that folks in libya, egypt, and yemen, did not trade the tyranny of a dictator for the tyranny of a mob. the ceremony had a message to americans. that is that the four people who came home today for their final time were all american heroes, who gave their likes for their country. the president, the white house and the state department have been giving out a couple of messages the past two days. the first is that u.s. government had absolutely nothing to do with this anti-islam film although it was produced in this country. that's a tough message to get across to the arab spring where people are used to di

in benghazi at the u.s. consulate there. we've been in touch with the state department, again, they are not coming forthwith a confirmation yet. they do tell us there is one american not identified who has been killed after an attack by islamists. they were protesting an independent film made in the united states said to be critical of the muslim prophet, mohammed, and gotten some play on the super net in the arab world. that is rousing up feelings. according to reports, again, unconfirmed reports, the u.s. ambassador was killed when he and others were trying to get other staffers out of the consulate in benghazi, libya, which was under attack, which have, in fact, burning down. a rocket propelled grenade flying around the car that they were in as they were trying to get in in that very dramatic scene. folks, this followed yet another assault on the u.s. embassy in cairo, egypt yesterday. again, protesters there very angry about this very same film. they scaled the walls. they tore down and burned the u.s. flag there. they displayed a black flag with arabic writing. no injurie

was there was no significant demonstration going on outside that consulate area in benghazi. so she is making it sound if the extremists who were heavily armed came in and joined a ongoing big demonstration that got whipped into a frenzy and led to this attack. >> right. well, obviously there's still a lot of facts to be learned. we don't know everything yet but there is one group of people who are not at all confused by what happened and those are the people who attacked consulate and killed four americans. they know what they planned and what they did. even worse than that, as tragic as this is, is the signal that it is sending to al qaeda and terrorists and extremists all around the region, which is, that we did not have adequate security for our ambassador to libya. we didn't have adequate security for our embassy in cairo on september the 11th. and that official americans and private americans are vulnerable. tunisia is a good example. when they couldn't really take over the embassy they storm ad school across the street. they couldn't get the hard target. so they went after a soft target. i thin

in the consulate in benghazi in eastern libya, there is a cross border aspect to this story that is making right now in tunis. and another aspect of the story tunisia, like other countries are being hard-hit by the united states to stop the radicalism we see here in wake of the arab spring. they told me they did not see the tunisia step between the protests of the islamist and protestors the other friday that did knowledge damage to the u.s. embassy, and its compound and a school nearby where about a hundred american kids were staying until about two hours before the protest. there with us a demand coming from the americans that the tunisia act against these radicals. and there was a taunt in that too. tunisia looking to america to fork over half a billion dollars in needed money over the next year to payoff loans in this economy. there is a bit of a taunt there too by the united states that, hey you come through there and then maybe we can come through with this. back to the breaking news, we'll get a hard confirm when we get our crew on the ground seeing this. about a thousand security surroun

in benghazi. now al-qaeda affiliate in north africa is calling for more murders. in a statement posted on the web, terrorists urge preliminaries to kill or expel representatives of the u.s. government as retaliation for that anti-islam video that went viral last week. u.s. officials have been giving conflicting information, really, about whether that video may have played a role in the murders. ed henry is live at the white house. i guess jay carney spoke out about this today. >> he did. about the attacks in benghazi, it looks that military attacks. it doesn't look like demonstrators crawling all over the wall like in cairo. it looked like something of a different nature. we need to understand and remember that in a massacre that was killed last night sided with the rebels against the government. he was a symbol of openness and democracy in this government's commitment to see a better day for the middle east, which is one of the reasons why he was targeted so specifically last night. megyn: monica, today if you read the press, are questioning why are embassy would be issuing a statement that there is no question that the film sounds incendiary. but in america we believe in free speech. that is one of the fundamental principles of our country. they are questioning why are embassy would feel compelled to weigh in on this statement by private individual that many in the muslim world find offensive. but we in america believe in free speech. >> yes, that's exactly right. that is part of the reason why this was so appalling. when the outrage started to build, they doubl

at the consulate during the day in benghazi but they do not despite reporting there was no sizable or significant demonstration at the time the attack unfold at 9:30 p.m. given the precision of the attack, advance surveillance has not been laid out. it is said they took the attack from the inspiration of events in cairo and cairo cannot be ignored as the inspiration. this does not mean the crowd demonstrated against the movie suddenly and spontaneously turned violent. officials say the c.i.a. has assessed or did assess the security situation in eastern libya and it was deteriorating before the attacks based on the four attacks going in june on diplomatic and western targets, a report we brought to you on friday. >>shepard: what explains this disconnect? >>reporter: the disconnect seems to be semantics. we reported today based on the intelligence source on the ground in libya the assault on the consulate was with no warning and included fire from two locations. we had rpg's and mortar fire, include one that hit the roof and direct and indirect fire. we are told there were two waves to the assault

the u.s. consulate in benghazi. and then the attack began. and because of the precision of attack, the direct fire, the indirect fire in the preplanning that could have taken place for that, it's very possible that there was some either inside help, or some type of surveillance that had gone on at the compound. in fact, the libyan president over the weekend said he felt there was preplanning. and premeditation in to this, especially considering not only did these militants attack the compound, they also then attacked a safe house nearby. that the u.s. consulate officials could have gone to for help. the protests around the middle east continue. in pakistan, we saw violence today. in fact, the embassy in islamabad tetch rarely suspended the operation ahead of the protest because they knew it would become violent. tear gas flying. pakistani police brought out the big water cannons to push protesters back from climbing in to the u.s. embassy compound. in lebanon, the leader of the hezbollah militant group took to the streets in a rare public appearance to call for continueed protest.

to be cautioused on what the president believes about benghazi. this is a president who said in the new york times, that the muslim call to prayer is one of the prettiest sounds he has heard at sunset. i guess you have your own opinion of what it sounds like. but it makes one wonder what the president believes about the mushim world. you talk about practicing religion, i wonder if ambassador stevens gets to survive because of a youtube video. it is all a red herring and this doesn't happen on 9/11. and it reminds me, steve and reminds me the president and administration and military trying to characterize the fort hood massacre not far from where i am here in dallas as workplace violence. that is minimizing extremism and secretary of state was a small band of people. if that is a small band, i don't want that on my doorstep. >> steve: no. michael goodwin said whose side are you on? he meets with the muslim brotherhood and yet when netanyahu is in town he doesn't meet with him. >> it was a big story that was lost in the aftermath of the killings at the embassy. when the president said i don't have
